Footwear has been a fashion statement for centuries. In the 18th century, elegant shoes were made of red "morocco" leather and even brocaded silk damask. They were held tight with decorative buckles made of steel or silver, which were often studded with "paste" gems. James Craig owned "The Golden Ball," a silversmith and jewelry shop in Williamsburg, from the 1770s to the 1790s. He sold shoe buckles similar to those that inspired our Golden Ball Mirror to Virginians who dressed "? la mode.
